Why I Design

The reason I want to be a designer and not an engineer has to do with the way each of the professions’ products are used. The goal of an engineer is to create a product that is absolutely the best implementation for a given situation. The entire creative act is contained within the product. It has no chance to grow, to be more to the user than it already is.

But the designer can choose to design the way the product is used. This means that the implementation could be different for each person; the experience is unique and personal; the design can have an impact limited only by man’s imagination.

Designing widgets that are strong and appropriate is necessary and noble; but I have no interest in it. For my career to have more meaning than that, I must concentrate not on the designs, which are limited, but on the people, to which there is no limit.
