In keeping with other such resources online as Mark Pilgrim&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/diveintomark.org\/archives\/2003\/08\/04\/xp\">How to install Windows XP in 5 hours or less<\/a> and Michael Heilemann&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/binarybonsai.com\/permanent.php?p=605&#038;more=1&#038;c=1\">It&#8217;s all about the Bling Bling<\/a>, and in case I ever need to install Windows on my machine again, here&#8217;s a running list of the things I turn on, turn off, install and remove from Windows to make it worth using.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn on text smoothing &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/typography\/cleartype\/tuner\/1.htm\">Microsoft&#8217;s tool<\/a>, something OS X has on by default.<\/li>\n<li>Replace the GUI windows and toolbars with Freestyle &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/freethemes.forthnet.gr\/preview\/310804.html\">Instructions for enabling visual themes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.belchfire.net\/article555.html\">a better way<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.windowsx.org\/enhance\/myvs\/uxtheme.html\">software needed<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/ryskamp.org\/misc\/osiris-media-xp-freestyle-theme.zip\">Osiris Media XP Freestyle Theme<\/a> (zip file)&#8230;for Windows XP SP2, use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neowin.net\/forum\/index.php?showtopic=312381\">this tutorial<\/a> if you&#8217;re having problems<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.candylabs.com\/approcket\/\">Approcket<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/launchbar.com\">LaunchBar<\/a> clone for Windows. Even more necessary on Windows than OS X, because of Microsoft&#8217;s crazy file structure.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/avantbrowser.com\">Avant Browser<\/a>, which uses IE&#8217;s rendering but adds tabs and autosave layout abilities.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/mozilla.org\/firefox\/\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a>, and set it as the default browser.<\/li>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/windowsupdate.microsoft.com\">Windows Update<\/a> and update with all their patches.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lavasoftusa.com\/support\/download\/\">Ad-Aware<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.safer-networking.org\/index.php?page=download\">Spybot<\/a>, use their &#8220;update&#8221; functions to get the latest detections, and run a scan to find and protect against <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/2100-7355_3-5192308.html\">spyware and tracking cookies hidden on the machine.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Download TweakUI and follow most of <a href=\"http:\/\/diveintomark.org\/archives\/2003\/08\/04\/xp\">Mark&#8217;s tips<\/a> #67-102. This is how you stop Windows from constantly bothering you with those little pop-up windows (&#8220;It looks like you plugged in a camera. Can I help you delete all the files on it?&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Get nicer OpenGL screensavers, like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maddogsw.com\/flurry\/\">Flurry<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Since most Windows OpenGL drivers are terrible, install something like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scitechsoft.com\/products\/ent\/gld_home.php\">SciTech&#8217;s GLDirect<\/a>, which uses the better DirectX drivers to do the rendering.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>More to come as I remember and discover them&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Microsoft Windows increasingly annoys its users with pop-up notices, childish treatment, intrusive &#8220;features&#8221;, and a difficult GUI.
